Karma System
Karma is OASIS's cross-platform reputation layer. It accumulates across all OApps and can be used to gate features, unlock content, and surface trustworthy contributors.
Design Principles
- Cross-OApp — karma earned in one OApp is visible in all others. A player's reputation travels with their avatar.
- Transparent — the full karma history (Akashic Record) is accessible via API. Every award and deduction has a source and reason.
- Positive-sum — the system is designed to encourage cooperation, creativity, and helping others — not zero-sum competition.
- OApp-sovereign — OApps define their own award events and amounts. OASIS provides the infrastructure; OApps define the economy.
The Akashic Record
Every karma event is recorded in the avatar's Akashic Record — an immutable, append-only log of every positive and negative karma event, including source OApp, event type, timestamp, and amount. This makes karma auditable and resistant to retroactive manipulation.
OApp Integration Pattern
A good OApp karma integration follows these rules:
- Award on meaningful events only — quest completion, helping another player, creative contribution. Not for clicking buttons or logging in daily.
- Use specific karma types —
CompletedQuestrather thanJoinedOAPPfor quest events. Specific types make the Akashic Record useful. - Gate content on karma thresholds — use
GetAvatarsWithKarmaGreaterThanto unlock hard content for high-karma players. - Deduct sparingly — negative karma should reflect genuine antisocial behaviour, not minor mistakes.
Suggested Karma Tiers
These tiers are a starting point — tune them to your OApp's economy:
| Tier | Karma Range | Suggested unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Initiate | 0 – 99 | Basic OApp access |
| Apprentice | 100 – 499 | Social features, clan membership |
| Adept | 500 – 1 999 | Advanced quests, item crafting |
| Master | 2 000 – 9 999 | Rare NFT drops, leadership roles |
| Grandmaster | 10 000+ | Governance participation, exclusive zones |
